Sputnik I (aka Alpha-2)

Sputnik was the first articifial Earth-orbiting satellite. It was launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957, and contained radio beacons operating on 20 and 40 MHz. The satellite orbited the Earth every 96.17 minutes and ranged in altitude between 142 and 588 miles. The radio beacon was active for a period of three weeks, from launch until October 25, 1957.
