General Aviation Air-Ground Radiotelephone Service

These channels are allocated for the provision of radiotelephone service to airborne mobile subscribers in general aviation aircraft. This service supports connection to landline telephones from suitably equipped general aviation aircraft. Based on recent monitoring (2013), the use of this service is considerably less than it was a decade or more ago, possibly due to the use of cell phones from airplanes, which is technically not allowed by FCC rules.

The general aviation air-ground radiotelephone service is governed under 47 CFR 22.805 and subsequent sections, and by footnote NG12 to the U.S. table of frequency allocations.

The ground signalling channeling is assigned to all ground stations and is used to alert aircraft to incoming phone calls.

The effective radiated power (ERP) of the ground stations must be between 50 W (minimum) and 100 W (maximum). The ERP of airborne stations must be between 4 W (minimum) and 25 W (maximum).
