Navtex
|
In the United States, the Coast Guard operates Navtex service at 518 kHz, which provides teletype-like weather, navigation, and safety messages to ships at sea. The Navtex signal serves maritime users out to a distance of about 200 nm from the shoreline.
The international Navtex frequency is 518 kHz, while 490 kHz is used in some countries, but not in the U.S.
Navtex Marine Safety Information (MSI) is also broadcast on HF at 4209.5 kHz.
There are many free or low-cost software packages that will decode Navtex messages on a computer with an audio connection to a receiver tuned to the appropriate frequency.
