General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS)

According to the FCC's rules, "the GMRS is a land mobile radio service available to persons for short- distance two-way communications to facilitate the activities of licensees and their immediate family members." GMRS is a licensed radio service, but because millions of cheap combination FRS/GMRS radios are sold through big-box stores and other outlets, and because the fee for a GMRS license is many times the cost of the radio equipment, a very small fraction of GMRS operators actually bother to obtain a license.
There are seven frequencies in the GMRS service that are shared with the FRS service, but GMRS radios are allowed higher power.
The maximum power allowed in the GMRS service is 50 W. The allowed bandwidth is up to 20 kHz [47 CFR 95.633(a)].
