Family Radio Service (FRS)
|
According to the FCC definition, "the Family Radio Service (FRS) [is] a private, two-way, very short distance voice and data communications service for facilitating family and group activities."
Millions of FRS units are sold for as little as a few dollars each at big-box stores, and are used for family communications during vacations, shopping trips, car caravans, etc.
FRS operations are authorized by rule under Part 95.191 of the FCC rules. FRS channel frequencies are listed in 47 CFR 95.626(a). Some of the technical rules that apply to FRS radios include the following:
- Limited to FM voice or limited tone-type transmissions with a maximum of 12.5 kHz bandwidth (F3E or F2D emissions only) [47 CFR 95.633(c)].
- Peak frequency deviation of +/- 2.5 kHz and maximum audio frequency response of 3.125 kHz [47 CFR 95.637(a)].
- Maximum ERP of 0.5 W [47 CFR 95.639(d)].
- The antenna must be integrated into the FRS unit (i.e., no connection for an external antenna shall be provided) [47 CFR 95.647].
The lower 7 FRS channels are shared with the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS), a licensed service that is allowed higher power (5 W) on these frequencies.
